Basic Formula for Area

The simplest formula for calculating area is for a rectangular or square shape:

Area (ft²) = Length (ft) × Width (ft)

Basic Length Conversion

Area (ft²) = Length × Width

Multiply the length by the width in feet. A 20 ft × 15 ft (6.1 m × 4.57 m) rectangle has an area of 300 sq ft (27.87 sq m).

Circle Shape

Area (ft²) = π × (Diameter ÷ 2)²

π = 3.14159265359. A circle with a 10 ft (3.05 m) diameter has an area of 78.54 sq ft (7.3 sq m).

Triangle (Base & Height)

Area (ft²) = ½ × Base × Height

Measure the base and the perpendicular height in feet. A triangle with a 12 ft (3.66 m) base and 8 ft (2.44 m) height has an area of 48 sq ft (4.46 sq m).

Trapezoid Shape

Calculate square footage of a trapezoid

Area (ft²) = [(a + b) ÷ 2] × h

a and b are the 2 parallel sides (bases). h is the perpendicular height. A trapezoid with bases of 14 ft and 10 ft and height of 8 ft has an area of 96 sq ft (8.92 sq m).

Area (ft²) = (θ ÷ 360) × π × r²

θ is the central angle in degrees. r is the radius. A sector with a 90° angle and 6 ft (1.83 m) radius has an area of 28.27 sq ft (2.63 sq m).

Parallelogram
Area (ft²) = Base × Height

Base is the bottom side length; height is the perpendicular distance between the base and the opposite side. A parallelogram with a 15 ft base and 9 ft height has an area of 135 sq ft (12.54 sq m).

Calculations for 'L' Shaped Rooms or Areas

Split an L-shaped room into 2 separate rectangles. Measure the length and width of each rectangle in feet. Calculate the area of each rectangle, then add both areas together for the total square footage.

  1. Sketch the floor plan on paper and divide the L-shape into 2 rectangles.
  2. Measure the length and width of each rectangle in feet (ft).
  3. Multiply length × width for each rectangle to get 2 separate areas.
  4. Add both areas together for the total square footage.
L-Shaped Living Room + Dining Area

Section A (living room): 14 ft × 10 ft = 140 sq ft (13.01 sq m)

Section B (dining area): 6 ft × 5 ft = 30 sq ft (2.79 sq m)

140 sq ft + 30 sq ft = 170 square feet (15.79 sq m)

Calculating Square Footage for Walls

To calculate the square footage of a wall for painting or decorating, follow these 4 steps:

  1. Measure the height of the wall from floor to ceiling in feet (do not include baseboards and moldings).
  2. Measure the full length of the wall in feet, including doors and windows.
  3. Multiply height × length to get the total wall area in square feet.
  4. Subtract the area of windows, doors, and closets that will not be painted or covered.

Add 10% extra material to the final square footage total for waste and coverage variations.

Calculating the Square Footage of a House

To calculate the total square footage of a house, measure the width and length of the entire exterior in feet. Multiply width × length for each floor. Add the area of each floor together for the total home square footage.

To calculate only the living space square footage, measure each room separately with these 4 steps:

  1. Create a floor plan: Sketch a floor plan of each level of the house.
  2. Measure individual rooms: Measure the length and width of each room from wall to wall in feet (ft) or meters (m).
  3. Multiply length × width: Calculate the area of each room in square feet and write each area on the plan.
  4. Add all room areas: Add the square footage of all rooms together for the total living space.

Include: Hallways, staircases, closets, and foyers in the living space total.

Exclude: Garages, unfinished basements, and utility rooms — these are not part of the living space.
