- Sketch the L-shape on paper — mark all corners and approximately label dimensions.
- Draw a dividing line at the inner corner to create 2 rectangles. You can extend a horizontal or vertical line — both work and both give identical totals.
- Measure Section 1 (Width₁ and Length₁) from wall surface to wall surface in feet.
- Measure Section 2 (Width₂ and Length₂) from wall surface to wall surface in feet.
- Multiply each: Area₁ = W₁ × L₁; Area₂ = W₂ × L₂.
- Add both areas for the total.

Section B (dining nook): 10 ft × 8 ft = 80 sq ft

T-Shape and U-Shape Rooms

- T-shaped rooms: split into 3 rectangles. Add all three areas. The center bar connects to both arms — count it only once.
- U-shaped rooms: split into 3 rectangles (left arm, base, right arm). Add all three. Ensure the corner areas are not double-counted.

Paint Calculation for an L-Shaped Room
For wall paint, calculate wall area separately from floor area. Wall area = perimeter × ceiling height.
